In the aftermath of a particularly difficult and convoluted breakup, when you reflect on where you have been, you may feel a sense of relief, wonderment, disbelief at how much less stress there is in your life.
When you look ahead, however, it can evoke paralyzing feelings of fear that you will not be able to move on and that you will be alone forever.
The relief is there in part because you have already lived the experience, it is known to you. The fear is in part because you are going from a known to an unknown experience and the unknown can be such a scary place. It’s much easier to fear what you can’t know. After a breakup, give your future the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it WILL be ok.
